One difficult night does not define a disorder. But when getting or keeping an erection becomes repeatedly harder, the change deserves calm attention.
Why erection quality changes
Erections depend on coordinated blood flow, nerves, hormones, stimulation and mental state. Diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking, poor sleep, medicines, anxiety and relationship stress can contribute.
ED is not a measure of masculinity. It is a health and function concern with several possible pathways.
What a clinician may review
A private history covers onset, consistency, morning erections, desire, medicines, stress and sleep. Assessment may include blood pressure and targeted tests such as glucose, lipids or hormones.
Treatment is not one-size-fits-all
Improving relevant health factors, prescribed medicine and psychosexual support can each play a role. Devices or specialist treatments may be considered when appropriate.
